MCP vs API: Why Your Agent Doesn’t Want More Endpoints

Published in AgentMCP Insights.

“We already have APIs. Why do we need MCP?” Fair question — and the answer is not “APIs are dead.” Most MCP servers use APIs behind the scenes. The difference is who does the integrating.

An API is a phone book

An API documents endpoints: GET /customers/123. A developer reads the docs, writes code that calls exactly that endpoint, in exactly that order, and ships it. Change the plan, and someone has to write new code. The AI never sees the phone book — a human dials for it, in advance, forever.

MCP is a menu

An MCP server describes its own tools — names, plain-language descriptions, and exactly what each one needs — in a format every agent already understands. At runtime, the agent calls tools/list, reads the menu, and picks the right tool for what you just asked. No developer predicted your request. The agent figured it out live.

The three differences that matter

  • Discovery: APIs are hard-coded ahead of time. MCP tools are discovered at runtime.
  • Reuse: An API integration works for one app pairing. One MCP server works for every MCP agent.
  • Who can set it up: APIs need a developer. MCP needs a URL, a scoped token, and someone who knows the safety settings (that’s us).

APIs still win for fixed, high-volume machine-to-machine pipelines. MCP wins the moment the next step depends on what a human actually wants. Which is… most of a small business’s day. Get your apps agent-ready →
